Life Story for John Terrell

Mr. John Lee Terrell passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018 following a lengthy illness. John was born to the union of Willie Lee and Velma Terrell on May 19, 1930.

John was educated within the Muskegon Heights Public School system where he met the love of his life, the former Betty Ruth Phillips, John worked at the historic Occidental Hotel where he was able to save and buy an engagement ring for Betty, they were married on September 16, 1950 and to the union were born Debra J. Terrell Gay, Lanette M. Smith both of Muskegon Heights, MI. John (Jacqueline) Terrell of Muskegon, MI and Dr. DeAnna Burt- (Joseph) Nanna of Spring Lake, MI.

Prior to the decline in his health, John faithfully served as a deacon and treasurer for his church, the Westside Church of God in Christ in Muskegon Heights, MI. Even thereafter, until the days prior to his death, you could listen to John praying and reciting passages from the Bible. John loved bible study and taught Sunday School and Young People Willing Workers (YPWW) for his church.

John was a longtime employee of Howmet Misco (Arconic) in Whitehall, MI before retirement and also worked at the Lakey Foundry. John also served in the United States Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954 with the rank of Private First Class serving as a medic.

John loved his community, serving on the school boards of Muskegon Heights Public Schools and the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District (MAISD) where he also held the office of President.

John loved and intentionally invested in the lives of four generations of his offspring-his children and grandchildren. He did the same for the children of his church, neighborhood and community at large. Everyone loved and respected "Mr. Terrell".
